Random Round Up: Land-O-Lakes

Home again from my favorite place in the world - A big lake in a tiny town in Minnesota. It was a week of perfect weather, food and family, and parking myself on the end of a dock for hours a time.

So basically: My version of heaven. I couldn't choose only five Random Round Up pics like normal, so enjoy a couple bonus visuals this week.
Not a bad way to kick of the month of July.
All under 7 months - Love these fuzzy hoodlums.
Party like it's 1776! My 4th of July manicure.
Full moon magic... Photos just can't capture the reality.
Children of the Lake
Fires to the north made for some incredible sunsets.
Guess I'll be wearing this ring whether it's on my finger or off for a while!
The reality check was a harsh one this week, but getting back in the swing. Happy Friday eve, all!

Five Fast Tips for a Destination Bachelorette Party

Planning a party can get hairy: Picking a date, planning a menu, decorating, and inviting the right people all gets to be a lot going on. Toss in a destination where you've never been, invitees you don't know, and money exchanging hands, and welp, you've got planning a destination bachelorette party.

I lived to tell the tale, and you can too. Here's what kept me sane, as well as a lil' synopsis of our time in the infamous New Orleans, Louisiana.

Tip 1: Work With The Bride
Yep, you want it to be a fun surprise, but there's a fine line between keeping things on the DL and adding an extra pile of stress to your planning plate. Talk out the big stuff: Invite list, to-do desires, and what kind of lodging she'd like. Bride Katy was amazing and actually chose our lodging - an incredible city-block-wide house with it's own pool - on her own. She also let me know that she wanted a few structured activities, but a lot of down time to wander around (and enjoy some pool-side lounging) too.
Tip 2: Read Reviews & Consider Various Budgets
Not everyone on the invite list can break the bank on one trip. And keep in mind too that 'breaking the bank' looks different for everyone. Katy landed our great house through VRBO - a website that offers homes that can be rented like hotel rooms - and each of us paid her what was due. I, on the other hand, used a lot of tourism websites as a jumping off place for my research. Because I'm the Maid of Honor, I decided to treat everyone to tickets for a French Quarter walking ghost tour. It wasn't an extravagant cost, and I felt like it was a nice gesture to make friends as I didn't know anyone going other than the bride. I chose the tour we took based on awesome reviews from New Orleans tourism sites, as well as awards the tour had received over the years.
Our swamp tour I chose based on similar criteria, as well as the fact that our group was not renting a car of any kind. The tour we took offered a pickup option which sent a small tour bus to and from the swamp. As this rang in at $42 per person, I let people choose if they wanted to attend or not. A yes/no deadline was emailed to the group, followed by a payment due date to those attending. PayPal proved a simple, secure, and easy-for-everyone form of exchanging money.
Tip 3: Transportation Apps Are Awesome
We used both public transportation options as well as taxi services on our trip, and never had a problem getting where we needed to go. These days, many city transportation authorities offer downloadable schedules or apps that update when there are changes in the system. We used it often for streetcar and bus schedules. Check to see if a multi-day public transportation pass is available too: We were able to pick up discounted three day streetcar/bus passes from a Walgreens drug store near our house.
Uber is a fantastic private car taxi service that functions easily from the Uber app, and we couldn't have gotten by without it. Download it and get to know it if you're headed for a populous city (it's not quite everywhere yet, but spreading fast). Cash-free and literally in the palm of your hand, it was a life-saver on several occasions.
Happy Uber Campers!
Tip 4: Pack Flat Favors
What's a party without a party favor? Air travel and packing goodies can be tough - especially if you're like me and are a carry-on only kind of gal. I decided to go for some useful fun: Each girl got a wedding-color-themed hair tie, a temporary bachelorette party themed tattoo, and a ring pop. I also packed goodies like fun drinking straws, funny napkins, and drink markers shaped like little men in speedos. A little planning ahead can get you everything you need - I utilized Etsy, a trip to Target's dollar section, and Francesca's Closet to round things out.
Tattoos from here and hairties from here. Both awesome sellers!
These guys became our mascots and had all kinds of adventures.
Tip 5: Be Organized AND Flexible
It's a tough balance between the two, but you gotta create a plan and then roll with the punches as it all unfolds. I was a spreadsheet maniac prior to our outbound flight, keeping track of who had paid for what, when I needed to send reminders, and lists of locations and restaurants we may want to hit. A lot of the things on our list happened, but keeping the schedule open with lots of options to choose from was a winner with a large group of personalities. All of us managed to do pretty much everything we wanted to, due in large part to knowing our options. Having a list of restaurants around where we were staying was so handy, and knowing about various activities (shopping districts, historic locations, etc.) allowed us to never have to spend a lot of time wondering what to do next.
Local cuisine is a must-try.
Some Bourbon Street-area architecture.
Lafayette Cemetery - All New Orleans cemeteries are above ground crypts.
It's a fascinating and beautiful walk through.
Hope this helps, and that you enjoyed a little taste of NOLA along the way! Good luck planning - You'll survive, I promise!

Random Round Up: NOLA

Fresh off the plane from Louisiana!

New Orleans, if we're getting specific. My dearest bride-to-be Katy and I worked together to plan her bachelorette bonanza, complete with French Quarter ghost tour, time with gators on a swamp boat, and lots and lots of sight seeing and good eats.

I'll post a more thorough recap another time, but thought a little peek into the trip might be fun:
Morning coffee, best had IN the pool.
French Quarter ghost tour, complete with creepy statue shadows.
Swamp tour with a Cayman named Al.
Chicory coffee and beignets: An absolute must from world famous Café du Monde.
Laissez les bon temps rouler!

The Wizard of AZ

After our inaugural trip to Phoenix, Arizona last year with our friends Katy and Ben, we decided it simply had to become a yearly treat. This time around was no disappointment, full of sun, laughs, and new adventures - A few of which I'll show ya now!
If you decide to take yourself to the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, definitely shoot for hitting a few of these spots. I already can't wait to go back (and that Washington rain is only enforcing that feeling)!

This place is like the Vegas of golf. Seemingly the most fun to go at night, you check in and pay for your bay, and after some length of wait (we waited an hour in the on-site restaurant, but they said on the weekend it can be up to four hours - you can book ahead online), a worker will come get you and guide you through the computerized choosing of games and score keeping. Each ball has a little microchip, so a simple wave of your club over a sensor and the system can track your ball amongst the hundreds zillions of others shooting out into the range towards the various lighted targets.

All the food from the restaurant is served to your lounge area if you wish, and each bay is stocked with comfy couches and heating lamps (yes, even the desert cools down at night). Not quite done with your fun? Even though you reserve your desired chunk of time upon check-in, a swipe of your card and you can add time as you go along.

This place has a flavor for every frozen-dessert lover you could possibly come up with. The always friendly staff offers unlimited tasters, meaning you can try the bubble gum or the Guinness (yep, really), but still stick with a safe dish of dark chocolate in the end.
True confessions: We were here 3 out of 4 nights. ...And we weren't an anomaly.

There's not much to say here: It's incredible. Better than I ever imagined it could be. And as a kid who knew every childhood vacation came with a National Park, I've seen my fair share of America's beauty. Somehow nothing quite holds a candle to this one. Pictures can't do it justice, no matter how much of an editing master you are (and I'm not one at all).

It's about a 3 hour drive from Scottsdale, and there are plenty of stretch spots along the way. We stopped at the same rest stop coming and going, and it was a great mid-way point to hop out and get the blood flowing. Bring sunscreen and dress in layers - We were freezing driving over the higher elevations and when we arrived, but the day quickly turned bright and sunny. There are lots of places for food along the way, and even a small snack shop at the South Rim location in case you forget your water or PB&J.
See the brave squirrel?
Unreal.

 Pool Time

There's so much to do and see, it's pretty easy to completely miss the down-time that's so essential to a relaxing vacation. Make sure to pencil in some time to soak up the amenities of wherever you're staying. In between outings we had plenty of poolside time to read and nap and swim, and Katy and I even treated ourselves to a spa morning. What's vacation without some total self-indulgent lounging?!

I know this was a seriously image-heavy post, but it's so hard to capture The Canyon (yes. capitalized.) especially. You're going to have to just go yourself!

....No seriously. Book that ticket now. Thank me later.

Random Round Up: The Land Of AZ, Revisited

Surprise, I'm alive!

We took a week off last week and headed for the Arizona desert: Palm trees, sun, and wonderful friends. What could be better?
A delayed flight made for a later-than-planned arrival, but still managed some pool time!
Have you heard of Top Golf? There are quite a few, but make it a must-do in Scottsdale.
New Adventures: A first-time visit to the Grand Canyon for all four of us!
Frost Gelato - Delicious and we even dined with a semi-celebrity one night!
My vacation souvenir? A horrendous cold. Pho and cold meds have me on the mend.
I'm healing up and getting back into the swing of things - More to come on the trip later in the week. Have a great one!

Edit: See the whole recap of the trip right here.
